Refresh Your Bedding For Spring
Freshen up your bed as part of your spring cleaning routine.
Get Out Your Summer Bedding
If you have a Summer Weight quilt insert for warmer temperatures, switch it out with your Winter or All Season Weight quilt in preparation for summer weather. If you use heavier sheets and quilt covers in the winter, such as flannel, swap them for something lighter like cotton or linen.
Air Out Your Down and Feather Bedding
Hang your quilts, pillows, cushions, and mattress toppers outside for several hours to clear out any odours or staleness and helps the down maintain good loft and insulation.
Check the weather prior to putting your bedding outside to ensure it won’t get caught in the rain or exposed to a significant amount of humidity. Moisture can cause mold and mildew to develop on down and feather.
It’s great to air your bedding on a bright sunny day, but try to hang it in the shade or away from direct sunlight.
Turn and Flip Your Mattress
Rotate and/or flip your mattress to ensure even wear and avoid depressions in the surface of the mattress.
Launder Your Bedding
Spring is the perfect time to launder all linens and bedding, including sheets, shams, pillow protectors, quilt covers, mattress protectors, and bed skirt. While you’re at it, consider laundering other bedroom items such as curtains, rugs, and stuffed animals.
Down and feather bedding should only require cleaning every few years if properly protected and kept in a clean environment. If your down and feather bedding requires cleaning, check the care instructions with the manufacturer. While synthetic bedding can be washed at home in a large machine on low heat, down and feather bedding should be dry cleaned or washed at a professional cleaner who has experience cleaning down and feather products.
Replace Old Bedding
Down and feather bedding should last quite a long time if cared for properly. Pillows should be replaced every few years. 5 years is a good rule of thumb, but this can vary depending on how often they're used, the quality of your pillow protectors, and the cleanliness of the environment. If your pillows smell or are significantly discoloured, it may be time for cleaning or replacement. Quilts can last a lifetime, but this of course depends on how gently it is used, the cleanliness of the environment, consistent use of a quilt cover, how it has been cleaned, and other factors.
Bring Springtime Inside
Open your windows for fresh air and add fresh flowers or a plant to your bedside table.
Get ready for dreamy spring sleep!
